If any category at the World Championship 2026 summed up how tight international paintball has become, it was Veterans. Twenty teams played down to a final between the United States and Poland that finished 4-3, the third of the category's four medal-deciding games to be settled by a single point.
Pool stage
France were untouchable in Pool A, winning all four games without conceding a single point, well clear of Sweden, Great Britain, Spain and Bulgaria. Belgium topped Pool B with 8 points, ahead of a tie for second between Germany and Finland that Germany won on a 4-1 head-to-head result. The United States won Pool C at 8 points, with Denmark taking second in an event where the debutant federation reached the quarter-final in its first appearance at this level. Poland won Pool D with a 3-1-0 record and a 15-7 margin, drawing 3-3 with the Netherlands before beating Portugal 4-3 to close out the group.
Knockout rounds
France began the knockout rounds by beating Germany 4-1, Poland beat Denmark 4-1, Sweden beat Belgium 4-2, and the United States beat Portugal 4-1 to set up the semi-finals.
Poland's 4-3 win over France sent the reigning champions out at the semi-final stage, while the United States needed the same scoreline to get past Sweden. France recovered to take bronze with a 4-0 win over Sweden, a comfortable margin after two semi-finals that had both gone the distance.
The final
The United States beat Poland 4-3 in the final, played on the NXL Pro field, for the country's third Veterans title. It was Poland's second final defeat of the day, coming shortly before their Men's team turned the afternoon around with a gold of their own.
What it means
The United States' Veterans title is their third, following wins in 2023 and 2024, a run that puts the category alongside the country's Women's, Under 19 and Under 16 dominance this year.
France's bronze comes after a pool stage in which the team did not concede a single point, a reminder that the three-time champions (2021, 2022 and 2025) remain one of the category's strongest sides even in a year they did not reach the final.
Denmark's run to the quarter-final on debut is one of the standout stories of the tournament, a first World Championship appearance that immediately produced a result most federations take years to reach. Sweden's fourth-place finish is their best return since a silver medal in 2017, back in the top four of the category for the first time since.
Four of the category's biggest games this year were decided by the smallest of margins. Between a debutant nation reaching the last eight and a reigning champion pushed all the way to a 4-3 semi-final defeat, Veterans produced some of the closest competition of the whole event.
On the numbers
Veterans played 48 games across the two days, with every team guaranteed at least one preliminary game on the tournament's main webcast field, in line with the event's pre-event scheduling target. Beyond that first guaranteed slot, most of the category's games played out away from the cameras: only the final itself was shown on the main field among the category's knockout games, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and bronze medal game all played on the secondary Tomahawk field. It meant that for a category producing some of the tournament's tightest finishes, much of the drama happened just off the main stage until the very last game.
The 20-team field also meant every side played the full slate of four preliminary games before the cut to the top eight, the same format used across the tournament's larger categories, giving Denmark's run to the quarter-final on debut a genuine four-game body of work behind it rather than a single standout result.
